A pause on 99

This is the 99th post in this blog, so it's perhaps appropriate that, before we reach our ton, there should be a brief pause. Our visit today was the first for a long time which, during working hours, found no one on site. Pat had told us on Monday that he needed some time without all the various tradesmen's vans parked at the front, in order to deal with an issue which, ironically, has arisen with our water supply. Our celebration of H2O finally reaching us, evidenced by the meter cover in the repaired roadway:


has had to be tempered by the discovery that we have a leak in the pipe laid a long time ago from the edge of our front garden to the garage, where the supply enters the house. At the moment we have a couple of exploratory holes in the hardcore:

but this may be where the fault is, in a coupling closer to the house

but it looks very much as if machinery is going to have to return to facilitate a repair. In a way this may be timely, as Pat has been talking about doing some digging in the field-strip to create the soakaway for our rainwater, and having the boundary post-and-rail fence built to enclose the extension to the original plot.

It was actually a pleasure to have the house to ourselves and see the significant work that has been completed in the last few days. We know that the templates have now been drawn for the worktops in the kitchen, and all the cabinetry looks to be ready.

As we left he kitchen my eagle-eyed companion noticed that the pocket-door between the dining area and the hall has been fitted.

this feature arose because Adrian felt it would be good to be able to see, and have a light-flow, right through the house from front to back

and yes, it slides

We knew that Sion had had a tricky couple of days fitting the pipework in the main bedroom's ensuite, but discovered that he had not only completed it, but had done much more besides

bottom left, the connection for the bidet part of the combined toilet/bidet, the fitting of which has caused so much difficulty .....

..... not least because a semi-accessible thermostatic valve is needed - if we have to adjust it, we will life the quartz cover which will sit on on the panelling

and in the family bathroom the woodwork has been finished ready for tiling

Dewi, joiner number 2, has been busy fitting skirting boards and architraves, which have been neatly sanded ready for painting.

(we still have temporary banister rails - the staircase and surrounds will go in very late in the process apparently)

we now have white discs covering the sprinklers fitted in the ceilings

and the battening for the cladding of the porch has started

We hope that it's a short pause and that we have more to record soon in our 100th post.

Eighteen months have passed

So it has been a year and a half since the last blog post. Yes, I have become lazy about updates and yes, the last few things have been completed. Well not quite - we still need to have the labels removed from the velux windows, and I need to sort out the building insurance policy, but to all intents and purposes we are there, and have been for the last few months. We had waited a while for Pat to sort out the last few things. The replacement skylight had been leaning against the container tor the best part of a year, the lovely stone walls remained uncapped, and the pedestrian path from the gate to the front door remained unfinished. In the end it took an email following the death of a close contemporary to elicit a response from Pat, and then things happened quickly. More trenches - and now they are full

Dan and his assistants have achieved an amazing amount this week, in spite of some unhelpful spells of rain. The excavation work started on Tuesday and continued on Wednesday, with all of the trenching except that for the garage completed. This included digging to below the level of the old septic tank chamber which was at the house end of the garage, and which necessitated a very wide and deep trench across what will be the front of the house. On Thursday morning we received this photo from our rather surprised neighbour-to-be, as a concrete pump big enough to build a skyscraper arrived at 8 o'clock. Over the course of the day, 10 deliveries of concrete went through the pump and into the trenches. Given the tightness of access to the site, the narrow roads through the village and the fact that the deliveries were stacking in order to ensure continuity of supply for the pump, it's amazing that the crew seems to have kept of all our neighbours onside.  We popped by just after lu...

Gravel, gates, and a working wood-burning stove

Pat had wanted to wait for Andy's completion of the boundary walls to lay the gravel-retaining grids and the crushed stone. With one of their characteristically early starts, the front parking area began to be transformed. The white grids, which have attached landscaping fabric, protect the tree roots and reduce the gravel's tendency to wander by lunchtime we had a new look and with gates in place, a black paint finish preferred to the galvanised look, it just remains for the approach from the road to be tarmaced and the pedestrian path given its resin-bound top layer This week Chris finally arrived to fit the flue which links the woodburner to the chimney lining.
